Civil Rights Museum holding MCS charter surrender forum

In an effort to provide information on the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools consolidation issue, the National Civil Rights Museum is holding a public information forum on Wednesday, March 2.

Participants include Memphis City Schools Board member Martavious Jones, Shelby County Schools Board Chair David Pickler and University of Memphis Law professor David Kiel.

March brings change to Arc of the Mid-South

The Arc of the Mid-South is one of more than 700 chapters across the nation working to transform the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The Arc has been on the frontlines for over 60 years as advocates for change in legislation, education, health, housing, and more.

Beginning in March, the Arc of the Mid-South will be changing its look and adopting a new visual identity to better reflect the work of the Arc in the community. This new brand will encompass the whole of the Arc - at the national, state and local levels.

Millington man arrested in large meth lab bust

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Shelby County sheriff's deputies carried out one of the largest pot meth lab arrests in recent history Friday.

According to a press release from the sheriff's department, deputies removed over 50 'one pot' meth labs from a residence in the 4500 block of Valley Stream and the surrounding area.

Santa’s best helper dies

James “Jim” Tully Kyle, a familiar face to Memphis children for over 20 years, has died after a brief illness. The 66-year-old died Sunday, Feb. 13, at Methodist North Hospital.

Thousands of Mid-South homes have pictures in their homes of Kyle with their children. He was Santa Claus.

Kyle was born in Locke, Tenn. It’s just one mile south of the general store at the intersection of Benjestown and Cuba-Millington roads near Shelby Forest. After graduating from Kingsbury High School, Kyle enlisted in the Marines. Upon completion of active duty, Kyle worked for Holiday Inn and was transferred to Michigan, where he met his wife, Bobbie.

Free dental exams, education for kids

February has been designated as National Children’s Dental Health Month by the American Dental Association and Shelby County Health Department.

The focus of the observance is on providing oral health education to all children despite their economic status. The Health Department’s School Based Dental Prevention Program is participating in several outreach activities during the month of February. The purpose of these events is to teach children and their parents about the importance of oral hygiene to overall health.

The program was so popular the first time around, it actually ran out of money. The City of Memphis and Shelby County leaders are working together again to clean up dumped tires by offering a dollar for every tire they turn in.

Soup Sunday to help Youth Villages

Youth Villages hosts its 22nd Annual Soup Sunday on Feb. 27 at 11a.m. from 2 p.m. at FedEx Forum. During the event you can sample a variety of soups, breads and desserts, from the best Mid-South restaurants and caterers.
