Information provided by the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department:

The Tennessee Department of Health Laboratory in Nashville has identified mosquito specimens from Shelby County that tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The specimen pool of mosquitoes was collected on August 18th, and 19th in the 38053, 38017, and 38028 zip codes of Shelby County. These positive pools indicate that West Nile Virus is present in the County.

Art goes to the goats

Some young artists are turning to the Goat Days Festival for inspiration this week.

Here’s more information from Shelby County Schools:

Student members of the National Art Honor Society at Millington Central High have been spending a lot of their time with goats in the early part of the school year.

It’s not as strange as it sounds, though.

These goats are actually statues, and the students involved have been adding an array of artistic touches to dress them up for the upcoming Goat Days festivities in Millington.

The project is part of a partnership with the Millington Arts Council and several local businesses.

The painted goats will be part of a parade on Friday, September 10. After the parade, they’ll be part of a year-long display around town before being auctioned off to benefit the Arts Council’s scholarship fund.
