Friends, coworkers mourn the death of MLGW lineman

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Friends and co-workers are still morning the loss of an MLGW lineman who was killed while on-the-job earlier this week.

Thursday, Earnest Holliday spoke death of his co-worker, 42-year-old Reggie Payne, who was killed in a job-related accident Tuesday.

"I've known Reggie for over 20 years, and it's a tragic situation," Holliday said.

Payne was a crew leader and lineman in Electric Distribution.  Tuesday afternoon, he and another employee were performing routine transmission maintenance off Highway 51 in Millington when part of a pole fell and struck him.

The other worker was also injured.

MLGW lineman fatally injured when pole falls

MILLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) – An MLGW lineman was killed Tuesday while working in Millington.

Utility officials said the accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday while crews were performing routine maintenance. 

Reginald Payne, 42, was fatally injured when part of a pole fell and struck him.

Meanwhile, a second employee was transported to The MED.

Officials said Tuesday's accident was the first on-the-job death for MLGW since 2002.

Golf tournament to benefit local school

Sheriff’s Office to Host Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will again sponsor a charity golf tournament to benefit the students at Klondike Elementary School.  The tournament will be held later this month in Millington.

“For the past several years, the Sheriff’s Office has supported Klondike Elementary in North Memphis as our ‘Adopt-A-School.’  Last year we raised several thousand dollars for student programs.  We’re hoping many people will join us for this year’s event,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

The tournament will be held on Friday, June 18, at Edmund Orgill Golf Course at 9080 Bethuel Road. Lunch will be served at noon and the foursome shotgun start begins at 1:00 p.m.

There is a $100.00 entry fee.

Pouncer takes New York

A prestigious internship for a University of Memphis student has turned into a summer of fun for Pouncer, the Tigers' mascot.

Katie Zisson of Oakland won an internship with the Public Theater in New York.  She is a drama student at the U of M.   A friend in the school's marketing department suggested Katie take Pouncer to the Big Apple and blog about "his" experiences.
