Household hazardous waste facility closes for holiday

If you’ve got paint or other household items you need to get rid of, but can’t toss in the trash – you’ll need to hurry and take care of them before Independence Day.

The Memphis and Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will be closed July 2 2011 for the holiday weekend.

However, the facility will be open on Tuesday and Thursday, June 27 and 28, from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

As your children play outside during the hot summer months, be aware of the danger that is present when young children are around swimming pools, lakes and streams.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years.”

Heat advisory conditions are expected to persist through Monday evening.

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperature is expected. Prolonged exposure to this heat can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.

City, County open Office of Sustainability

City, County open Office of Sustainability

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell will launch the joint Memphis and Shelby County Office of Sustainability Tuesday, May 24, at 9 a.m. in the Goldsmith Room at the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

The Office of Sustainability is charged with the implementation and oversight of the Sustainable Shelby Plan. This plan, developed in 2008 with 130 participants and a team of professional urban planners, established a strategic framework for action with regard to “green” initiatives in Shelby County.

The Tennessee Valley Authority and MLG and W are teaming up for an Energy Smart event, on Wednesday April 20 in celebration of Earth Day. The Workshop will take place at 11a.m. at the Central, Whitehaven, East Shelby, and Bartlett libraries. During the Energy Smart workshop you will learn more ways to conserve energy and save money. Shelby Farms has big plans for Earth Week

The 5th annual Earth Week at Shelby Farms Park will see an exciting shift in style and setting in 2011.

The week-long series of events runs from April 17 through 23 and will be held on the shores of Patriot Lake near the visitor center, reflecting the focus of the Park’s next big project - expanding Patriot Lake to nearly twice its size.

Earth Week will promote environmental stewardship, nature, health and recreation with events that offer fun and entertainment for the entire family.

Pink Eagles soaring with Shelby Sheriff's help

The Pink Eagles are soaring high with a little help from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

The Pink Eagles are a girl's social etiquette leadership development and entrepreneurial training organization.

Yesterday the sheriff's department handed over items from the group's wish list to the Pink Eagles founder and director Loretta McNary who was overwhelmed.
