Christmas tree recycling saves county money

Shelby County government says its Christmas tree recycling program won’t just provide free mulch to people; it will also save the county thousands of dollars.

“Starting before the Christmas holidays will allow vendors to quickly dispose of unsold trees, wreaths and other greenery,” said Tom Needham, the county’s director of public works. “Recycling will help save an estimated $5,000 that would normally be spent to dispose of trees at the county’s landfill.”

Select Cracker Barrels to install electric vehicle chargers

The following came from Waste & Recycling news

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store is installing the chargers at select restaurant locations across Tennessee and is becoming a participant in the EV Project, an initiative to increase adoption of electric vehicles by creating a charging infrastructure.

The EV Project is managed by ECOtality, which is providing the electric chargers to the Cracker Barrel locations.

"Becoming a leader in The EV Project continues our tradition of striving to anticipate and meet our guests´ expectations and, at the same time, allows us to participate in a meaningful way in the nation´s explorations of energy independence," CEO Michael A. Woodhouse said.

A total of 24 chargers will be installed along "The Tennessee Triangle," a 425 mile stretch of highway that connects Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga.

Can major flooding happen here again? Yes.

Farmers market ends first season

The inaugural year of the Millington Farmers’ Market closed in style with a Fall Festival complete with hay rides, inflatables, pumpkin painting and a cookout.

An estimated 2,500 people attended to celebrate the success of Millington’s newest destination made possible through collaboration by the City of Millington, local growers and the community.

Millington Farmers’ Market had a “soft opening” when May 1st brought the greatest flooding disaster in its history. The market was schedule to have its grand opening that same day and many local growers’ crops were damaged or completely destroyed.

Yet the Millington Farmers’ Market survived as a thriving marketplace that is expected to grow in size, scope and popularity year after year.
