MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - During a special called meeting Monday afternoon, Shelby County Commissioners unanimously approved agreements with Bartlett, Millington, and Collierville, allowing them to move forward in forming their own school districts.
Each of the suburbs reached an agreement with Shelby County Schools to pay a certain amount in order to use buildings owned by the school district.
Mayors of the three suburbs say the decision was a long time coming.
"A lot of time, energy, and money to get us where we wanted to be," said Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald.
"Very encouraging obviously," agreed Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner. "Two hurdles passed but not the end of the show."
"Our school board has already done a lot of work with the transition committee and the next thing will be for the school board to get a superintendent hired," explained Millington Mayor Terry Jones.
