MPD officer accused of filing false identity theft reports

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer is accused of filing false identity theft reports.

Officer Brian Phillips filed a report saying a suspect opened five separate accounts using his identity at a credit union in Millington.

He claimed more than $20,000 in debt was incurred in his name.

Memphis Police Economic Crimes investigators looked into the report and found the accounts were valid debts made by Phillips himself.

He turned himself in after a warrant was issued. He is currently out of jail on a $5,000 bond.

Phillips is currently relieved of duty with pay.

Skimming machine suspected of stealing debit info at gas pump

MILLINGTON, TN- (WMC-TV) - The United States Secret Service is investigating after someone set up a credit card skimmer at a Millington gas pump. The machine may have gotten dozens of people's personal information.

A Covington police officer was the first person to tell Action News 5 of the identity theft scheme. Now, he wants to warn others to be extra careful.

Billy Norris gets gas at the RaceWay gas station in Millington very often. But last month, he found out that his debit card no longer worked.

"My bank contacted me Friday and let me know my card was declined and they would issue me a new card," said Norris.

Norris' bank canceled his card as a result of the ongoing fraud that occurred from a device he says was placed in one of the gas pumps.

It is called a credit card skimmer and it steals your bank account information.

SUV crashes into Millington High School

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A vehicle crashed through the walls of Millington High School Saturday after a police chase.

According to Millington police, driver 27-year-old Marco Dwayne Taylor would not stop for a police officer. When the SUV approached a big curve in the road, Taylor did not make the turn and drove into the high school.

'The suspect drove straight and tried to negotiate this curve... And went straight up into the building," said Millington Police Investigator Charlie Coleman.

After the SUV went inside of the high school's cosmetology classroom in the vocations building, Taylor attempted to flee on foot. Shortly after, officers caught up with the driver, and arrested him.

"He [the SUV] went all the way up into the room, actually hit the teacher's desk," said Coleman.

Municipal school districts bill passes Senate committee

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A Tennessee Senate committee passed a bill lifting the ban on municipal schools putting the Shelby County suburbs one step closer to forming their own school systems. But the battle is not over yet.

Though suburban parents see the committee vote as a breakthrough, they are still bracing for more hurdles ahead.

"We're just cautiously optimistic," said Phillip Walker, Better Bartlett Schools. "Just like when we voted overwhelmingly to have municipal schools."

The parents with Better Bartlett Schools say the Tennessee Senate committee vote that brings the Shelby County suburban municipalities closer to educational autonomy is exciting, but there is a lot of work to do.

"We still have an election coming up if the bill passes and we have to ensure the municipal schools referendum passes once again in Bartlett," said Derek Venckus.

School merger supporters hold demonstration

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - About a dozen people showed up outside the administrative offices of Shelby County Schools Thursday morning, not to protest, but to show their support for unified schools.

Braving the cold and media microphones, a dozen or so members of various non-profit groups shared their hopes and support for a Unified Shelby County School district.

"I think what's really neat is when you bring the voices of these organizations together to talk about this work as a whole," said Lisa Watts of Teach Plus. "How it affects teachers, how it affects students. And at the end of the day, how it affects the community at-large, because our teachers and our students are the greatest aspect of what we do in our community."

Watts believes the more involved the community is in the merger process the better it is for the children whose education depends on a successful merger.
