Keep your children safe in a pool or lake

Keep your children safe in a pool or lake

As your children play outside during the hot summer months, be aware of the danger that is present when young children are around swimming pools, lakes and streams.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years.”

Former Globe Trotter star hosts basketball camp

Harlem Globetrotter legend and Memphis native Michael Douglas will host a basketball camp in the Millington Civic Center from July 5-8.  The camp is for children aged 7-14 and will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day for the cost of $100.

The camp seeks to not only improve fitness and basketball skill, but also help campers improve self-esteem and maintain positive attitudes. The camp is part of the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation whose mission is to provide communities with activities that are fun and promote healthy living.

Michael Douglas grew up in Memphis and attended Booker T. Washington High School before going on to star on the basketball team at Dyersburg State College in his home state of Tennessee.  He later was asked to join the Harlem Globetrotters after trying out with 1,500 other basketball players in 1986. He toured with the team until 1993 when he began to focus exclusively on the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation.

The world's largest swimming lesson

The world's largest swimming lesson

Even though the official start of summer is still a few days away, the swimming season has already arrived.

It's important that children and adults know how to swim and the safety rules to observe while at the pool.

Make A Splash Mid-South is committed to making that possible for everyone.

Buckle up your helmets for this year's Annual Paul Reviere Bicycle Ride.

This fundraiser is sponsored by the Al Chymia Shrine Temple to augment capital for the group's 22 hospitals which treat children with orthopedic problems, burns, spinal problems and cleft palate.

The bicycle ride is held each year in the memory of Paul Reviere, the 5-year-old son of Past Potentate Herman and Peggy Reviere, who died in 1969, as the result of burns over 82 percent of his body.

The Memphis Grizzlies, in conjunction with the National Basketball Academy, will host their annual Grizzlies Summer Hoops Camp Series at several locations in Memphis and the Mid-South during the upcoming months.

The camps are open for boys and girls ages 7-16, and will give these basketball enthusiasts of all skill levels and experience the chance to learn the game from the ground up.  From the art of the jumper to the beauty of text-book passing and defensive footwork, experienced instructors will be on hand to share their knowledge and love of the game during sessions that focus on improvement both for the individual and in the team setting.
