Planned Parenthood Supporters Meet with Congressman Steve Cohen

Planned Parenthood Supporters Meet with Congressman Steve Cohen

On February 24, 2012, a group of Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis (PPGMR) supporters met with Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) at his district office in downtown Memphis to thank him for his stance on birth control access. Representative Cohen sent a letter to President Obama asking him to stand strong on HHS requirements guaranteeing coverage of birth control without copays.

The provision under the Affordable Care Act of 2010, means that employers are required to offer insurance that covers women's preventative health care at 100% without co-pays. Birth control is one of the preventive services covered under the provision, but women will also be guaranteed well woman exams, cancer screenings including screening mammograms, domestic violence screening and counseling and osteoporosis screenings for women over 60, all without co-pays.

PPGMR Board Member Katy Leopard checked her 7-year-old daughter, Nonie,  out of school so that she could meet the Congressman.

Millington's interim mayor promises to help city heal

MILLINGTON, TN- (WMC-TV) – After a turbulent few months at Millington City Hall, things are finally beginning to settle down.

Millington's interim mayor said city leaders are beginning to re-focus after their former leader was at the center of a TBI investigation.

Interim mayor Linda Carter has been in office now less than a month.

"We're healing, we are healing," she said. "Everyone pulls together, we've all pulled together and I believe God puts things in out path to allow us to be better later on and that's what He's done for us."

On the city council for twenty years, Linda Carter had been out of public office three years when friends called and asked her to throw her name in the hat for the mayor's job.

Carter will serve as interim mayor the remainder of this year.

She took office in mid-January after embattled mayor Richard Hodges announced his retirement.

Millington mourns loss of a community man

Hearts are heavy in the city of Millington, after a local legend passed away Monday night.

Clarence Allen Roland crossed over at the age of 71. He was born to George and Ollie Roland on January 5, 1940, and married Carole Faye Whitehead Roland on June 13, 1960.

Roland was the man behind the helm of Roland's Tire at the busy, but cozy corner of Navy Rd. and Church St.
