Millington hosts congressional transportation meeting

The City of Millington played host to Congressman Stephen Fincher and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for a listening session on Feb. 25, 2011 at City Hall.

This was one of a series of meetings the committee is conducting with transportation stakeholders and state and local officials to receive input in developing long-term, job creating reauthorization of the nations’ highway, transit and highway safety programs.

Input wanted on new transportation bill

Friday, Feb. 25, Millington residents will have a chance to take part in a Transportation Bill Listening Tour.

The tour will be held at Millington City Hall on 7930 Nelson St.

Congressman Stephen Fincher and the chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure committee will talk to residents about a long-term, job-creating reauthorization of the nation's highway, transit and highway safety programs.

Questions and input from participants will be welcome.

The two hour session begins at 8:30 a.m.

Civil Rights Museum holding MCS charter surrender forum

In an effort to provide information on the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools consolidation issue, the National Civil Rights Museum is holding a public information forum on Wednesday, March 2.

Participants include Memphis City Schools Board member Martavious Jones, Shelby County Schools Board Chair David Pickler and University of Memphis Law professor David Kiel.

Sharpton joins union to oppose consolidation

Rev. Al Sharpton will appear at a union rally Thursday and ask voters to reject the proposed consolidation of Memphis city and Shelby County governments.

“Next Tuesday, election day, there is a measure on the ballot that does not serve the needs of this community and threatens your right to have a say in your future,” said AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Lee Saunders in a written statement.

Sharpton, union leaders and members of the local chapter of the National Action Network will meet at the AFSFCME headquarters, 485 Beale St., at 10:30 a.m.

Anti-consolidation protestors plan rally

Consolidation is one of the biggest issues voters in Shelby County face as Election Day nears. And this Friday, Oct. 15, opponents of the plan hope to give voters something to think about when they hold a rally outside Memphis City Hall.

Mayor, Aldermen oppose consolidation

Millington’s mayor and board of aldermen unanimously approved a resolution opposing the consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County governments.

Consolidation hot topic in suburbs

The possible consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County governments is causing a group that normally focuses solely on the Lakeland government to reach outside its city limits.

A Political Action Committee called Partnership Lakeland will hold a consolidation forum on Tuesday, Sept 21 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at First Baptist Church in Lakeland.
