Permission granted to “KICK BUTTS”!

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

3030 Poplar Ave.
10 a.m. to noon

• University of Memphis-University Center
499 University
1 p.m.

Memphis International Raceway to host the $25k Showdowns

Memphis International Raceway announced Friday that they will be the host facility for FC2 Promotions inaugural $25k Showdowns March 7 through 10.  

This event will feature four days of on-track action for a total purse in excess of $150,000.

Postal service teams up with Mapco

Postal service teams up with Mapco

The United States Postal Service is coming to a MAPCO convenience store near you.

USPS is offering four new contracted postal units.

These centers will provide retail and mail services at post office prices.

The postal service will operate during normal business hours.

It will be operated by MAPCO employees.

Literacy Mid-South moving from Cooper-Young, students and tutors to meet in public libraries

After 15 years in Cooper-Young Literacy Mid-South is moving, changing the way they do business and making other progressive improvements.

The Adult Learning Program is getting a complete overhaul, and the Smart Memphis Coalition will be working in an even deeper, more comprehensive way with more than 125 education and literacy providers in the Mid-South, according to the organization's latest newsletter.

Members clean up damage to Millington church after overnight fire

Church members are cleaning up and thankful after an overnight fire damaged  St. William Catholic Church.

Members are struggling with what they are calling a devastating loss, but one part of the church miraculously survived the flames.

The fire happened in the office portion of the church, and that area is completely burned down.
