Millington Elementary finishes first at Relay for Life fundraiser

Millington Elementary finishes first at Relay for Life fundraiser

It was a thrilling Tuesday evening at the annual Relay for Life "Millington Celebrity Waiter Night" dinner and fundraiser held at the Harvell Community Center. Local businesses, schools, clubs, organizations, and community leaders sponsored and decorated tables. Sponsors went all out for this year's "Hollywood" theme.

The fundraiser was established to generate much-needed funds and support to help those suffering from the dreaded disease of cancer. I was invited by Millington Elementary School principal Ms. Stephanie Beach to serve as a waitress. To my delight, MES came out the big winner for their table decorations inspired by the movie Cast Away; and, for raising $800 in tips/donations. Over the course of the night's festivities I learned that Ms. Beach is actually a cancer survivor. What an awesome night!

Suburbs file final brief in municipal school lawsuit

Suburbs file final brief in municipal school lawsuit

A final argument has been filed in federal court in an effort to clear the way for municipal school districts in Shelby county.

According to the Commercial Appeal, attorneys representing the six municipalities filed their final argument for lifting a statewide ban on new municipal or special school districts.

In November, a judge ruled against municipal school districts, saying the current law only applies to Shelby County.

No word on when the judge might respond to the filing.

If they prevail, suburban leaders say they it will likely be 2014 before schools will open.

Deserving Tennessee college students could lose Hope Scholarship

Deserving Tennessee college students could lose Hope Scholarship

Thousands of Tennessee college students are in jeopardy of losing their Hope Scholarships before they graduate.

Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill back in 2011 only giving students funding for the minimum hours required for a degree program.

The changes are expected to take place this year.

That means nearly 3,000 current students are expected to run out of scholarship funding before the end of their fourth year in school.

This funding change will also affect future college students.

Education leader wonders if Memphis, Shelby County merger will stick

Education leader wonders if Memphis, Shelby County merger will stick

One of Memphis' top education leaders wonders if a Memphis and Shelby County schools merger will stick.

Memphis school union president Keith Williams questions if the November 2010 Memphis schools charter surrender was futile.

Williams has his eye on the federal court battle to stop the suburbs from forming their own schools to avert the merger.

While the judge voided a suburban effort to start their own schools in 2013, he did not rule on the part of the lawsuit to stop it in 2014.

"I just don't know if at the end of the day, will all of this come full circle and we'll be back at square one?" said Williams.

Williams said if the suburbs are successful, he's concerned the long, hard battle that opened old wounds would only change the school systems in name.
