Millington High School competing in Bandmasters Championship

Millington High School’s marching band will compete against dozens of other Mid-South musicians in the University of Memphis’ annual Bandmasters Championship.

The contest will be held at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Saturday, Oct. 23. Gates open at 11 a.m.

The competition will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; the University of Memphis Band will march in exhibition at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds from the contest benefit scholarships for “The Mighty Sound of the South” at the U of M.

Originally known as The Mid-South Invitational, The Bandmasters Championship began in 1963. In the 1990s, the Band Alumni Chapter took on the responsibility for the event, which has hosted marching bands from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri. This year’s competition will feature 28 high school bands, including 2009 Grand Champion Munford High School from Munford, Tenn.

Art goes to the goats

Some young artists are turning to the Goat Days Festival for inspiration this week.

Here’s more information from Shelby County Schools:

Student members of the National Art Honor Society at Millington Central High have been spending a lot of their time with goats in the early part of the school year.

It’s not as strange as it sounds, though.

These goats are actually statues, and the students involved have been adding an array of artistic touches to dress them up for the upcoming Goat Days festivities in Millington.

The project is part of a partnership with the Millington Arts Council and several local businesses.

The painted goats will be part of a parade on Friday, September 10. After the parade, they’ll be part of a year-long display around town before being auctioned off to benefit the Arts Council’s scholarship fund.
