CBU hosts college SEARCH retreat

Over 60 college students from Christian Brothers University (CBU), the University of Memphis, Rhodes College, and Southwest Tennessee Community College attended the fourth annual Memphis Diocese College SEARCH Retreat at John Kyle State Park in Sardis, MS on November 18-20th.

Participants gathered to reflect on the different aspects of the Christian faith and the state of their own individual religious journey.

Harding Academy Wins Spirit Station at St. Jude Marathon

Harding Academy has won St. Judes first ever Best Spirit Station award for the St. Jude/Memphis Marathon. On Saturday, December 3rd, over 100 students, parents and faculty members from Harding braved the chilly, early morning temperatures to encourage runners and show their support for the patients of St. Jude.
 

Tennessee receiving early childhood grant

Today the White House announced that nine states, including Tennessee, are getting grant rewards for the race to the top program.

The grants come from the 500 million dollar early learning fund.

This the announcement of state grantees was made at a White House event.

There were more than 100 early learning and development experts, educators, policymakers, and researchers.

Lucy earns "Incredible" honor and salutes veterans

Principal Detris Crane was honored to have her school recognized this month with Incredible Pizza's “VIP” award.

Lucy ranked number one in attendance out of all local schools that participated in Incredible Pizza's recent Educator Night. Detris encouraged her staff to take part in the fun night as a way to "wind down" with co-workers and families.

As a VIP winner, the school will receive benefits throughout the year, like free family packs, an appearance by the “Incredibilizer” at a school assembly and a free pizza party for teachers.

Students also honored members of the military on November 10.

Local veterans visited classrooms and had lunch with students, and the kids created a poster with the names of service men and women who are serving now or have in the past.

Classes also participated in a writing contest, answering the question, “What Does Veterans Day Mean to Me?” Winners in the contest were Aniyah Torian, Jasmine Essary and Luis Gonzales.

Remember your favorite teacher? Some of Memphis’ most impactful school teachers received standing ovations, special awards and cash prizes of $100 at the 2011 Golden Apple Teacher Awards at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. It was a joyous celebration of all that’s right about Memphis City Schools, which merged this year with Shelby County Schools. The Memphis City Schools Foundation united with the Teacher Effectiveness Initiative and the Memphis Education Association to honor more than a hundred teachers. Each educator was nominated by their students. Here are the 2011 winners!

Attention country music fans, multi-platinum country music group Lonestar has announced that Richie McDonald is rejoining the group as lead singer.

His concert at Harding Academy  on Tuesday, December 6, will be one of his last solo appearances before the group's 2012 world tour which will mark its 20th anniversary.  Make plans to attend!

Group to pray for unified school district

Shelby County residents will meet to pray for the future of the county’s new, unified school district this Friday.

The group will meet the first Friday of the month at Schaeffer Memorial Chapel, 7887 Poplar Avenue.
