Local educator receives national recognition

Leading national education nonprofit ASCD selected Matthew Nelson, a curriculum specialist in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Shelby County Schools for its 2011 class of Emerging Leaders.

The Emerging Leaders program recognizes and prepares young, promising educators to influence education programs, policy, and practice on both the local and national levels.

"I'm honored to be a part of ASCD's Emerging Leaders program, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to grow as a professional," said Nelson. "I believe this program will help me become a more effective educator and I am anxious to work with other leaders from around the nation who are dedicated to educational best practices."

English language learners go wild at summer camp

Shelby County Schools’ award-winning ESL (English as a Second Language) Summer Camp is back for the fourth year.

The camp, which attracts students from around the district, has earned the statewide Excellence in Education Award from the Tennessee School Boards Association multiple times in its four-year run, and hundreds of ESL students from around the district are signed up for more multicultural fun over the next two weeks at Bailey Station Elementary and Bon Lin Elementary.

Award winning actress to host Orpheum Awards

Tony Award nominated actress and country artist Laura Bell Bundy will host the second annual High School Musical Theatre Awards at the Orpheum Theatre on May 26.

A native of Kentucky, Bundy originated the lead role of Elle Woods in the Broadway musical Legally Blonde, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. She also originated the role of Amber Von Tussle in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hairspray and played Glinda in the smash hit Wicked.

Prior to that, she originated the role of Tina Denmark in the successful off-Broadway production Ruthless, The Musical!, for which she received the Outer-Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk nominations. Her debut country album Achin’ and Shakin’ was released in 2010 on Mercury Records - Nashville. Bundy can currently be seen in a recurring role on the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Trophies, scholarships not enough for Bolton Auto Tech students

Paul Frye's Auto Technology students at Bolton High are riding a hot streak into the National Ford/AAA AutoSkills Finals.

Daniel Pace and Trey Collins both earned a spot in the national competition after winning first place in the highly competitive Tennessee finals. The two also won a trophy for having the highest written test scores in the first round of the state competition, marking the fourth straight year Bolton has earned this distinction.

The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills is a national automotive technology competition for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing careers in the auto service industry. Students are tested in areas of automotive knowledge, workmanship and problem-solving abilities. The competition also challenges students to diagnose and properly repair intentionally bugged vehicles under a strict time limit.

Watch BTW graduation, help fund scholarships

Friends for a Better Tomorrow is hosting a celebration of President Obama's historic visit to Memphis and the accomplishments of Booker T. Washington High School's students - the National Race to the Top Commencement Challenge winners.

A simulcast of the graduation will be held in the Venetian Room of the historic Peabody Hotel from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

A VIP cocktail party with featured speakers will follow the commencement exercise.

Bolton High School’s baseball field suffered serious damage during this month’s storms, but now another ball club is coming to the school’s aid.

The Memphis Redbirds are going to donate a portion of every ticket sold to their game Sunday, May 1 to Bolton.
