Treasure trove of antiques at appraisal fair

Experts want to take a look at your most prized antiques this weekend.

WKNO is hosting an antique appraisal fair at the Hilton Memphis on Sunday, Oct. 31. While it’s free to attend, appraisals will cost $5, all proceeds will help support WKNO.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.

Millington county clerk’s office reopens

There’s some good news for people who need to do business at the Shelby County Clerk’s office and live near Millington. The city’s service center will reopen after being closed for several weeks.

Here’s the information from a press release:

The office at 4836 Navy Road will re-open Monday, Oct. 4. Business hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:15 p.m.

There are seven other satellite offices of the Shelby County Clerk’s Office throughout Shelby County. To find the branch nearest you, go to the Shelby County Government website: www.shelbycountytn.gov and look for the “Elected Officials” tab on the left side of the home page. Then click “county clerk.”

On Monday, August 2, 2010 Hollywood Casino® Tunica will launch its week long “Bust the Slot Myths” educational campaign to support the American Gaming Association’s Responsible Gaming Education Week held August 2 – 6. 

This year’s American Gaming Association’s (AGA) theme, “Taking the Mystery Out of the Slot Machine,” will focus on educating casino employees and the public about how slot machines work and correcting some of the misconceptions about them. Understanding how casino games work is a key component of responsible gaming, and helping gaming employees learn more about how slot machines work is an important part of empowering them to educate casino patrons about what it means to keep it fun.

Sales Tax Holiday to provide savings for Tenn. shoppers

The fifth annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, Aug. 6 and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 8. During this weekend, consumers can save almost 10 percent on tax-free clothing, school and art supplies and computer purchases.

Gov. Phil Bredesen said the holiday is intended to help families across the state.

"The holiday provides much needed savings for all Tennessee shoppers and prepares children for success by making sure they start the first day of school properly equipped with items they need," Bredesen said.

Millington Farmers’ Market is open for business! 

Despite the flooding, the Millington Farmers’ market is now open for business on Saturdays from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM and Thursdays from 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM at 5152 Easley Street.  The mission of Millington Farmers’ Market is to promote a green lifestyle, economic opportunities for local growers and a dynamic destination in Old Town Millington by connecting local growers with the community in a marketplace of fresh, local, agricultural products.

All Things Art Festival

Despite the flooding disaster experienced by the City of Millington, the Millington Arts Council is going forward with the All Things Art Festival on May 22nd at the Millington Farmers’ Market on Easley Street in Millington. 

“The people of Millington need a couple of fun filled hours to share with their friends and neighbors.  I hope everyone will come out with their families to enjoy all the great music, art and activities planned for this outdoor street festival,” said Kate Armitage, President of the Millington Arts Council. 

The event will be a celebration of all things art and will include arts and crafts vendors, music, demonstrations, hands on art, an art show, Art Dog from the ArtCenter of Memphis and the Dixon Art Galleries Arts to Grow program.  Art vendor space is still available!
