Public meetings scheduled for new bridge project

The Tennessee Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Memphis Metropolitan Planning Organization will conduct six public meetings in late March and early April 2011 to discuss the Southern Gateway transportation project.

The Southern Gateway (previously known as the third Mississippi River Bridge project) consists of an overall plan for improving cross-river travel for people and freight, for better connections through Memphis to the tri-state region and the nation at large.

Concrete, bridge repairs mean I-40 lanes closed

A pair of construction projects means drivers will have to deal with fewer lanes on Interstate 40 this weekend and next week.

Here are the details from the Tennessee Department of Transportation:

I-40 East over Sam Cooper Blvd.
Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 23
I-40 East will have two lanes closed and two lanes open.
Sam Cooper Blvd. will have one lane closed and one lane open.

I-40 East and West at the Davies Plantation overpass
Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. Monday, March 21
One lane will remain open in each direction.

Millington hosts congressional transportation meeting

The City of Millington played host to Congressman Stephen Fincher and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for a listening session on Feb. 25, 2011 at City Hall.

This was one of a series of meetings the committee is conducting with transportation stakeholders and state and local officials to receive input in developing long-term, job creating reauthorization of the nations’ highway, transit and highway safety programs.

Shelby County encouraging carpooling

With gas prices on the rise, more and more Mid-Southerners are considering starting a carpool to and from work or school. The Memphis Area RideShare Program (MAR) is launching a drive to increase carpools.

MAR’s mission is to encourage commuters to consider alternatives to driving single occupancy vehicles to work every day. To promote carpooling, MAR, provides a web-based matching service and incentives to those who participate in the program.

Bridge repairs close lanes on I-40

Road crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will close lanes on a major portion of Interstate 40 this weekend and through early next week.

Starting Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. and lasting until 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, I-40 East will be down to two lanes in each direction and Sam Cooper will be down to one lane in each direction.

No delays as MATA prepares for winter weather

As the possibility of winter weather looms over the Memphis area, MATA isn’t experiencing any delays but is keeping a close eye on the skies.

“MATA’s snow plans will be implemented if conditions worsen,” said Alison Burton, MATA’s director of marketing and customer service. “The plans include sanding some side streets where buses travel, additional supervisory personnel to assist bus operators, additional customer service personnel to assist customers with route and schedule information and several maintenance procedures to ensure all equipment is ready to roll.”
